Contracts Finder is the UK government's free service for finding public-sector contract opportunities in England. It is genuinely useful, and it is free — but it only shows part of the market. If you rely on it alone, you will miss a large share of the tenders you could win. This guide explains what Contracts Finder covers, where it falls short, and the alternatives UK suppliers use in 2026.

What Contracts Finder does well

Contracts Finder publishes notices from English contracting authorities, generally for contracts above roughly £12,000. It is the official home for a lot of central-government and council opportunity notices, award notices and pipelines, published by the government on GOV.UK, and it costs nothing to search. For many suppliers it is the right starting point.

Where Contracts Finder falls short

  • England only — it does not cover Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, which run their own portals.
  • Higher-value bias — a lot of smaller work below the advertising thresholds never appears.
  • Buyer portals are excluded — councils and NHS bodies frequently run their own eProcurement systems where opportunities appear first, or only.
  • Basic search and alerts — keyword matching is literal, so "grounds maintenance" will not surface a notice worded as "landscaping".
  • No summaries or fit scoring — you read each notice in full and judge relevance yourself.
Contracts Finder answers "what has central government published?" It does not answer "what should my business bid for this week, across every UK source?"

The main alternatives

Other official portals

To cover the whole UK you also need Find a Tender (higher-value notices), Public Contracts Scotland, Sell2Wales and eTendersNI. Each is free, but that is now four or five sites to check, each with its own login and alert system.

Commercial tender platforms

Paid tools aggregate many sources and add features such as alerts and analytics. They vary widely in coverage, price and how much of the long tail of buyer portals they include. We keep an honest, side-by-side view on our Tendarix vs Contracts Finder comparison.

Tendarix

Tendarix indexes the official portals and 400+ individual buyer-side procurement sites, then adds plain-English AI summaries, semantic search and SME-suitability scoring — and it is free for everyone. You can see which councils we cover on the coverage page, browse by category such as construction or cleaning and environmental services, by area such as Scotland, or by supplier vertical such as our government cleaning contracts and printing frameworks pages.

What good coverage looks like

When you compare any alternative, the single most important factor is breadth of source coverage. A tool that only mirrors Contracts Finder gives you the same gaps in a nicer interface. Look for evidence that it captures the devolved nations, framework call-offs, and — crucially — the individual council and NHS portals where lower-value and early-stage work appears first. A useful test: pick a council you want to win and check whether the tool actually shows that council's recent notices. The long tail of buyer-side portals is where most SMEs find work they can realistically win, so coverage of those sources is worth more than any single feature.

How to choose

Ask three questions:

  1. Coverage — does it include the devolved nations and individual buyer portals, or just Contracts Finder-style notices?
  2. Search quality — can it match how buyers actually word notices, not just exact keywords?
  3. Time saved — does it bring opportunities to you with useful summaries, or do you still read every notice in full?

The quickest way to compare is to test your own business. Run a free Tender Fit Report, describe what you do, and see how many relevant live tenders surface in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is Contracts Finder being replaced?

Government procurement is modernising under the Procurement Act 2023 and the Central Digital Platform. The official sources continue to matter — see our Procurement Act 2023 SME checklist for what is changing.

Do I still need the official portals if I use an aggregator?

You still submit bids through the buyer's chosen system, and the official notice is the source of truth. A good aggregator helps you find opportunities across every source; you then bid wherever the buyer requires.

What does Tendarix cost?

Tendarix is currently free for everyone — unlimited searches, AI summaries and alerts, no card required.
