Overview
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a serious blood disorder with rapid onset, that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body. It affects the kidneys, heart and brain.
The condition can be difficult to diagnose because initial presentation can be non-specific, and this is a very rare disease. Rapid treatment is essential for optimal outcomes and includes plasma exchange and a range of drugs.
This disease primarily affects adults. Children are treated in paediatric haematology centres with support from the adult specialists.
Additional details
Specialist aftercare is also required. Services are required to have a programme of outreach and education to improve timely diagnosis and referral.

Patients need to start in treatment within 4/8 hours of a referral to the specialist centre. These contract awards have been made following direct award process A.
The estimated annual total value for this service is £13,782,927. The contracts started on 1st April 2026 and the service will be incorporated into providers' main acute contracts.
