Overview
Birmingham City Council is in the process of developing a "community cohesion" strategy. This is being led by the City Council Deputy Chief Executive.
Cohesion is a significant agenda for local government and in Birmingham with over 20 different first languages being spoken, over a 1/3 of the population being non-white, and a rich diversity of cultures and ethnicities, creating communities that engage, interact, feel safe and value their social space is important. It focuses on providing wellbeing services to the most vulnerable, deprived and under-represented sections of the community.
It sees "well-being" in its widest sense and strongly adheres to the principles of the 5 ways to well-being as well as working on an emerging programme of 'active citizenship' in the widest sense.[1] The purpose of this study is ultimately to assess the impact of the Birmingham Well-Being Service on community cohesion outcomes. An initial priority for the work will be to consult with key stakeholders and commissioners to identify how they define community cohesion and specifically what types of cohesion outcomes and impact they would most value.
