Overview
Conifer regeneration felling from within a 6.7 hectare section of Welsh Government woodland estate near Dolgellau (Grid ref SH765194). This site is being managed to revert to broadleaf woodland and it requires felling to waste of self-seeded non-native conifer regen throughout the site (any Scot’s pine to be left).
Conifers to be felled range from medium/large trees to small saplings. Conifers can either be felled to waste and left in long lengths to provide deadwood interest, or away from paths and forest roads if and where it is safe to do, larger trees can be ringbarked and small to medium trees can be left snagged in amongst the surrounding regen.
All trees should be felled in such a way that any damage to native trees is minimised. In places where brash needs to be stacked, e.g. if Western Hemlock has grown thickly along tracksides, brash can either be chipped or stacked into piles off the track but away from any features of possible botanical interest, i.e. on areas of no or sparse vegetation, and away from rocks with lichen or bryophyte interest.
