HS2 is looking for a specialist subcontractor to build accommodation and footway overbridges (bridges that go over the railway) as part of the North Chilterns to Aylesbury section of the project. You'll be responsible for constructing the concrete structures, drainage, waterproofing, and all associated civils works — essentially everything except the deck (top surface) of the bridge.
Requirements
- Specialist experience in overbridge construction (accommodation and footway overbridges)
- Ability to work to HS2 standards and British standards
- Capability to manage and supply all labour, materials, plant, and equipment
- Experience with Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) component construction
- Competence in structural backfill, drainage design, and waterproofing installation
- Ability to provide temporary works and craneage (crane hire/operation)
- Understanding of civils works for earthing and bonding systems
- Safety management systems compliant with HS2 requirements
Key Tasks & Deliverables
- Construct blinding layer (foundation preparation)
- Build all Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) components including impact walls, abutments, and wingwalls
- Install reinforcement (steel bars/mesh) within concrete structures
- Place structural backfill from the base of the impact wall upwards
- Install drainage systems including hollow block construction and connections to land/track drainage
- Apply waterproofing to the structures
- Complete civils works for earthing and bonding systems, including any required cabinets
- Install bearings (provided by main contractor) and supply/install shims (spacing materials)
- Install precast concrete revetment (facing) elements
- Construct and install maintenance access steps and handrails
- Provide all temporary works (temporary structures needed during construction)
- Arrange and provide craneage for lifting operations
How to Read This Tender
- 1This is a subcontract opportunity, not a direct contract — you'll be working under a main contractor (EKFB JV), so expect to follow their procedures, reporting lines, and quality standards. Clarify who the main contractor is and what their contract terms require.
- 2The phrase 'Excluding deck' is critical — the deck (top walking/driving surface) is not your responsibility. Make sure you understand the scope boundary and don't accidentally bid for work that isn't included.
- 3FRC (Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is a specific material; if you haven't worked with it before, this is a red flag. Ask for material specifications and consider whether you need to partner with suppliers or specialists who have FRC expertise.
- 4The reference to 'HS2 standards' means you'll need to comply with HS2's own technical requirements, not just British Standards. Request the HS2 Design Standards and Method Statements early — these often contain requirements that go beyond normal construction practice.
- 5Look for the full tender documents (Specifications, Drawings, and relevant standards lists) — the notice is just an outline. The real detail and constraints will be in those documents. Don't bid without reviewing them.
Tips for Small Businesses
- This is a large infrastructure project with strict compliance and safety requirements. If you're a small business, consider partnering with a larger specialist subcontractor as a joint venture or supply chain partner — you may not need to bid as the main subcontractor but could provide labour, plant, or specialist services.
- HS2 projects often score heavily on social value and supply chain sustainability. Highlight any local employment, apprenticeships, training schemes, or environmental benefits you can offer — this can differentiate your bid even if you're not the cheapest option.
- Craneage and temporary works are significant costs and logistics challenges. Get firm quotes early from crane hire companies and temporary works designers. If you don't have in-house expertise, budget for subcontracting these elements and factor that into your pricing.
